Everyone loves government intervention in schools! Everyone, that is, except for anyone who actually has to use them. The Hughes-Ulysses-Grunnings Educational Facility & Unity Project (not an acronym I promise) is perhaps the best example of this ever to exist – outside of religiously backed academies. The old and revered Hughes Grammar school was merged with the newly implemented Ulysses Academy along with a corporate sponsor – Grunnings Incorporated, the drill manufacturer, mining supplier and arms trader. Thus far and despite the vast sums of money being poured into it, this combined effort has gone poorly. Timetables are messed up, the two headteachers are locked in conflict, weird rule combinations continue to make life difficult/interesting. Students are splintering into factions both old and new and teachers are finding it difficult to cope. Most importantly, the janitor’s union prevents any maintenance staff from working in what is effectively a live construction site, so this task has been delegated to the Saturday and evening detention group. A group of troublemakers who always happen to be at the centre of anything that’s gone horribly wrong, however much they might protest their innocence with a bunch of weird stories about giant bees or vampire dinosaurs. A group of kids who are always surrounded by odd rumours and crazy people. A group of kids with monsters…
